CAC CA-16 Wirraway A20-652 photographed at the CAC factory at Fisherman's Bend. The aircraft was received by the RAAF at No 1 Aircraft Depot at Laverton on 4 July 1944 so it's possible that the aircraft was being prepared for its delivery flight to nearby Laverton. There is just enough of the serial number visible under magnification to be certain that the first two digits are 65 and the last digit is almost certainly a 2. The uncropped image shows the aircraft sharing the CAC ramp with Boomerang A46-157 which was used to test an engine cooling fan within the cowling. CAC historian Keith Meggs has identified Aeronautical Inspection Directorate Inspector Jack Shone in the cockpit about to run up the engine and Bill Cooper standing by on the tarmac. The photo was taken in front of CAC's Butler hangar which at the time was fitted with canvas curtains which were later replaced by doors. (Source: 13)
